INTERVIEW

1- Can you introduce yourself to those who do not know you?

Hello! Thank you for having me! My name is Macy Kate, and I'm a singer, songwriter, and artist who also has a deep passion for fashion.

2- You were mentored by Flo Rida, a hit-maker who has been nominated for a Grammy. How was it working with him? What was your reaction when you found out you would be working with Flo Rida?

My journey with Flo Rida started unexpectedly. I had the opportunity to perform at a music conference dinner when the scheduled act didn't show up. It was during this impromptu performance that Flo Rida's A&R manager, Ramont Green, discovered me and became my manager.

Working with Flo Rida has been an incredible experience. I've learned so much from him, including the importance of resilience, hard work, physical discipline, and having the right mindset for success. He taught me the value of humility, professionalism, and the significance of consistently delivering great performances. I've also gained a deep appreciation for my team, the trust we have in each other, and the respect we have for those who paved the way before us. Flo Rida's guidance and support have been invaluable to my career.

I was truly grateful and thrilled when I found out I would be working with Flo Rida. As a female artist in the music industry, I know that we often have to work twice as hard to gain recognition. Flo Rida took a chance on me as a strong female artist and believed in my talent. I will forever be grateful for his support and the opportunities he has provided me.

3- Can you tell us more about your latest music video, "Sugar"? What were your inspirations? What is the song about? What message did you want to convey with this record?

"Sugar" is a powerful song that delves into the theme of a toxic relationship, serving as a reminder of the strength and resilience of women.

The inspiration behind "Sugar" stems from my own personal experience with infidelity in a past relationship. It had a significant impact on me mentally, and I believe that cheaters often escape accountability from their close circles or the people they betray. It's an emotionally challenging place to be in and around.

With "Sugar," I wanted to share my story so that other girls and women could relate to it. Betrayal is a universal experience, and it's important to help others find their strength and voice, especially when you have a platform. Personally, I found my voice and strength through the support of my female friends and influential women I follow online who openly share their own experiences. Music is my way of connecting and sharing with others.

I'm encouraged by the positive changes happening in the music industry, with a shift towards empowering women. For example, Capitol Records recently appointed its first female CEO in the music industry, and platforms like Spotify have launched programs such as Equal to celebrate and support female singer-songwriters. It's wonderful to witness these strides towards gender equality, and I hope to be part of that movement as an artist.

4- Can we expect an album from you in the near future?

Absolutely! I've been spending a lot of time in the studio, which is where I feel most at home. I've been exploring and experimenting with different sounds and beats. While I can't reveal too much just yet, I can assure you that the upcoming project will be worth the wait! Stay tuned for more exciting updates.

5- Your song "Cry For Help" went viral and generated a lot of excitement among Gen Z's, particularly on TikTok. You generated over 5.8 million streams on Spotify. What was the reaction from your Gen Z fanbase?

I have the best fans in the world. I released very little music during the pandemic, and my fans waited for me and I am grateful. When I began releasing music again, my fans showed up and were super generous with their support especially on TikTok. I love seeing the content they make with my music, it’s the best feeling in the world to see people enjoying your music. Most of my fans are GenZ’s like me and I couldn’t be happier with the support. GenZ is a very special generation -- We have our hearts literally in two worlds being a part of an era that has been laid to rest and then pop culture as it is now.

6- How did you deal with the massive success of your debut song? Did it add pressure to your other songs?

“Cry For Help” is very special to me because it was released at a time when self esteem and confidence was lacking within me. When the song came out, it automatically became an instant hit and it was so eye-opening to see so many people singing the song and writing me all these messages saying how much they related to the song. We all feel insecure at some point of our lives and I’m super grateful for all the love and support I’ve received from my fans. They are the ones watching my music videos, streaming my music and sending me notes, I couldn’t ask for more!

7- How do you manage to stay grounded in the fast-paced world of the entertainment industry?

One important aspect is surrounding myself with good people. I'm particularly passionate about women in music and the incredible support I see women giving each other. Female empowerment and the mutual support among women play a significant role in keeping me grounded.

I recently discovered that for every five male artists in music, there is only one female artist. This 5:1 ratio is truly astonishing and I want to use my platform to bring about positive and impactful changes in the industry. It's essential to ensure proper representation and support for women.

8- Is there a French singer you admire? Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?

I have great admiration for Christine and the Queens. She brings a unique and captivating style of pop music. Her visuals are always intriguing and calm, yet incredibly captivating. Visual artistry is of utmost importance to me, and I love being involved in the creative process. Experiencing an artist like Christine and the Queens, who dedicates so much attention to visuals, is truly inspiring. She is an incredible artist that I deeply appreciate.

9- How was being part of ABC's Rising Star? Would you consider doing TV again in the future in America or abroad?

I loved the privilege of working for ABC! I enjoyed the process and working with Kesha, Brad Paisley and Ludacris was super fun. I get calls all the time from producers asking me to make TV again but I’m too busy right now with my music and fashion line MASÉ by Macy. I’d love to do TV again in the future!

10- What do you think of this kind of shows? Do you think that this gives in general temporary careers or on the contrary allows an important visibility to sign long-term contracts?

I think reality-singing shows are super helpful for artists trying to break into music because the preparation to perform and rehearse vocals and stage presence is great work. Plus, set life is super fun! If you have the opportunity to be part of something like that, go for it.

11- What are your future projects?

I plan to keep releasing music for my fans, touring throughout next year and releasing some new clothing drops for my line MASÉ by Macy. So keep an eye out!

It’s going to be a crazy fun year!

Quality, not quantity

We have made quality our habit. It’s not something that we just strive for – we live by this principle every day.
