EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Maisy Kay:
A Rising Star in Whimsical Pop
Conducted by Guillaume Jean Lefebvre
1. Could you introduce yourself for those who are discovering you for the first time?
My name is Maisy Kay! I’m an English singer-songwriter turned LA local. I like to describe myself as a whimsical, ethereal pop artist, with a love for fantasy and butterfly wings.
2. You’ve had an incredible journey this year, from touring with JVKE to now opening for Tori Kelly. How has performing across different continents shaped you as an artist, and what has been the most memorable moment on tour so far?
Touring the world has been an incredible experience and one of the absolute highlights of my life. It’s given me such a newfound respect and understanding of the industry, as well as the different parts of the world and how it felt to play there. For me, the most memorable moment was getting to play in London. I got to perform for my aunt and uncle, who had never seen me perform before and have done so much for me my whole life. It was a magical experience.
3. Your music, from "Sunlight" to "Technicolor Honeymoon", showcases a beautiful evolution in your sound. How do you see your style progressing in the future, and what inspires the stories behind your tracks?
I think my style will be directly influenced by my feelings. I’ve realized I write best when I write about my feelings and my life, and I’m most inspired when I focus less on a sound I want and just let myself write to see where it goes. I have a feeling this next project may lean more organic/ballad pop, but we’ll see!
Maisy Kay is an English singer-songwriter whose ethereal pop sound has captured hearts across the globe. Transitioning from the picturesque English countryside to the vibrant music scene of Los Angeles, she has carved a unique path, blending her love for fantasy with heartfelt storytelling. Her music, from "Sunlight" to the chart-topping "Technicolor Honeymoon", showcases her artistic evolution and emotional depth.
This year has been monumental for Maisy, touring with JVKE and opening for Tori Kelly, while celebrating career milestones like collaborating with Tiësto and incorporating the Na’vi language from Avatar into her single "The Beast Within". Beyond music, Maisy channels her creativity into designing EP covers, running her webstore, and hobbies like aerial silk and raising butterflies, reflecting her passion for whimsy and escapism.
With millions touched by her music, Maisy’s dream of headlining her own tour and working with icons like Taylor Swift or Ludovico Einaudi feels closer than ever. At her core, Maisy aspires to connect deeply with her fans, inspiring them through her songs to find beauty in life’s magical and emotional moments.
INTERVIEW
4. "Technicolor Honeymoon" climbed to #1 on the Pop Charts, and your collaboration with Tiësto reached #2 on iTunes. What does this recognition mean to you, and how do you celebrate these milestones?
I was with my mom for Mother’s Day when we saw the Technicolor Honeymoon news, and we cried! I couldn’t believe it. It honestly still doesn’t feel real, and I have a plaque on my wall to remind me. I celebrate these milestones by thanking and expressing excitement with my team. I couldn’t do any of this without their love and support.
5. Your single "The Beast Within" incorporated the Na’vi language from Avatar, which is such a unique concept. How did your love for fantasy influence your creative process, and are there other alternate worlds you’d like to explore musically?
I loved the Avatar movie when I was 10 so much that I set out to learn the language. So it was very fun to get to bring that into the music world. I’ve always loved fantasy, reading, and world-building, and I’d honestly love to do a song in Elvish or High Valyrian.
6. Moving from the English countryside to Los Angeles must have been a big shift. How has your experience of blending these two cultures influenced your music and artistic identity?
I think I definitely needed to get a sense of both cultures to become the artist I am today. Growing up in the countryside, my access to the music world was very limited, so jumping into a music-based city, where sessions were easily accessible, was a great learning experience for me.
7. When you're not creating music, you’re gaming, painting, practicing aerial silk, or even raising butterflies. How do these hobbies influence your creativity and help you stay grounded in such a fast-paced industry?
I adore animals, and I think I feel happiest when I’m expressing love for them or when I’m in nature. My apartment looks like a forest fairy lives in it, and I think I like to bring some fun and whimsy to the occasional monotony of real life. For me, that’s being creative through art or escapism through books and video games.
8. The music industry is known for being competitive and demanding. What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far, and how have you grown from it?
I think trying not to get disheartened by the streams and numbers game and trying not to compare my journey and progress to others was a big lesson I had to learn. I was driving myself crazy trying to make a hit song or a viral TikTok, and it stopped creativity from being fun for me. In turn, writing became harder. I finally regained my love and excitement for the industry when I stopped comparing my path to others, stopped worrying so much about creating a great end product, and just allowed myself to have fun again with something I’ve always loved.
9. You personally design your EP covers and run your own webstore. What’s the importance of maintaining creative control over your brand, and how do you find inspiration for your designs?
I absolutely love the creative process—it’s one of my favorite parts of the job—so I enjoy being as involved as possible in every aspect. I take a lot of inspiration from the fantasy fairy world I try to create with my stage persona, and I love a good theme! I like to brainstorm with my team a lot, find things on Pinterest, dig up old photo shoots, or just bounce ideas back and forth.
10. Looking ahead, what are some personal or professional goals you hope to achieve in the next few years? Are there any dream collaborations or projects on your bucket list?
I would absolutely love to go on my own tour! I think that’s a big step to take, but I feel ready for it. I’d also love to finally release an album—I think it might be time! I adore everything Chappell and Sabrina are doing right now, and of course, I’d die for a chance to work with Taylor Swift, but who wouldn’t? I’d also love to work with Ludovico Einaudi; he’s a modern classical composer whom I deeply admire.
11. Your music has reached millions of people around the world. What message do you hope your fans take away from your songs, and how does their support drive your journey?
I always hope my fans listen to my music and feel something. It brings me such joy to hear that I’ve helped someone through a dark time or reminded a husband how much he loves his wife. It’s those beautiful moments of connection that make being an artist so meaningful for me.
Quality, not quantity
We have made quality our habit. It’s not something that we just strive for – we live by this principle every day.
